What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing/ EMDR?

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy developed in 1987 by Dr. Francine Shapiro.
  • EMDR uses different forms of bilateral (left and right) stimulation such as; eye movements, tactile (touch) taps, and audio tones to help individuals feel less intense emotions related to a stressful, traumatic, and or an adverse childhood experience
  • Helps one to connect their body sensations, to their thoughts, and then to their feelings about themselves.

The Goals of EMDR

  • Identify and reprocess memories that are the causing current problems
  • Strengthen one’s ability to respond appropriately to current and future situations that may pose a challenge
  • Eliminate unhealthy; images, sounds, smells, taste, thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and beliefs) that are contributing to dysfunction in challenging situations
  • Strengthen needed skills, behaviors, and beliefs about one’s self and others that align with clients authentic self

EMDR is helpful for clients who have experienced stressful events in their lives;

  • Living in poverty and or witnessing community violence
  • Having a family member; die, have mental health issues, have a serious medical condition, misuse drugs and or become incarcerated
  • Experienced sexual and or physical abuse
  • Experienced feelings of neglect and or abandonment
  • Parents divorced or separated

When stressful memories are processed in a healthy and appropriate way, one can then began to live their best life.
